1. 8 Years since the U.S. took on the TalibanEight years ago today the United States launched air strikes against targets in Afghanistan.  President Obama is currently facing one of the biggest Foreign Policy decisions in the last decade, and it can be summed up in two words:  “Now what?”

2. Joe Biden’s Mind has drastically changed on Afghanistan - Why the VP switched his opinion on whether or not to send more troops to Afghanistan.  It has a lot to do with some angry dinners with Hamid Karzai.  (From The New Republic)

3. Gold is over $1000 an ounce. And by the way:  totally useless -
People are flocking to gold.  Allow me to point something out:  Right now, with one ounce of Gold, you could buy 406 gallons of gasoline.  What’s more valuable to you over the next six months?  The gold?  Or the Gas?  Why buy the gold when you could buy the gas, or invest in companies that MAKE the gas.  70% of the gold that’s dug out of the ground is used in jewelery production.  If things are really so bad, why are some people hoarding a substance they cannot eat or burn for fuel?  It doesn’t make sense now, and it never really has.  But then again… humans, when scared, rarely do.  Or as Warren Buffet put it: “gold gets dug out of the ground in Africa, or someplace. Then we melt it down, dig another hole, bury it again and pay people to stand around guarding it. It has no utility. Anyone watching from Mars would be scratching their head”.

4. Look who’s running for President in 2012
Laying the groundwork early, Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty heads to Iowa to… well… get to know people in Iowa.  (From Talking Points Memo)

5. Public High School bans Football Players from running through Bible Verse Emblazoned BannersFor the last eight years, a public high school in Georgia has allowed their football players to run through huge banners with Bible Verses on them before the start of the game.  Again, this is a public school.  Understandably, someone in district administration said: “This could cost us some money in a legal battle,” and told the football team to cut it out.  Now all the bible thumpers in the town are upset.  Bonus complete talking out of the ass quote comes from Georgia State Representative Jay Neal: “Our Founding Fathers had one thing in mind when they founded this country, and it was a Christian nation built upon the principles of Jesus Christ.” I hate to break it to Mr. Neal, but he’s dead wrong about that.  Somehow I think the town would have been more understanding of the ban if quotes from the Qur’an would have been displayed on the banners.  Flip the script, and then it’s easy to see the hypocrisy.  (From The Washington Post)
